I follow a few celebrities on Twitter, which is good for a laugh. However, in the run up to Christmas, a lot of them have been posting ways for Atheists to get through Christmas. Yes, the least religious religious festival on the entire planet bothers them. Apart from the words of some carols and the odd manger scene, how much Christian content are any of us really exposed too? Bugger all. It's all about Santa Claus, decorating trees and buying presents. That's all you hear about, none of which refer to a belief in God. Even the many versions of
A Christmas Carol gloss over any mention of
Jesus's birth. The whole season is so devoid of the gospel message that you could almost be forgiven for not even realising that it is a Christian holiday. Do you know what else is a Christian holiday?
Hallowe'en. But do we hear any whining about that while they're dressing up as devils? No. Do they complain while they're eating their Easter eggs? No. They, like Christmas, really contain so very little Christianity that it's easy to miss without even actively avoiding it.
My advice to Atheists during this Christmas holiday is to either accept the spirit of the season or boycott it entirely (and Hallowe'en and Easter too). I hope it's the former and we can put theological differences aside in favour of Peace and Goodwill to all and eating a little more then we should.
